How To Keep Peacock Bass(pbass care guide)
How To Keep Peacock Bass Fish/Peacock Bass Care
1)Intro
Peacock bass are one of the most vivid ,vibrant species of all monster fishes.Their beautiful colour, aggression made them one of the best choices for monster fish keepers.
Wild population of peacock bass are mainly located in North,South and Central american rivrers.
They are really popular for sportfishing.Their lagre mouth made them absolutely beast and predatory fish.
2)Appearance
There are many many varieties of peacock bass.Though all of them are known as Peacock bass.
Most of them are very bright in coloration.Thier green-red-yellow combined colour and peacock like tail made them attractive. Some of their species are
1.Cichla temensis ; they are also known as Azul peacock bass. They are most aggressive of their family. They are not suitable for home aquariums. They can grow upto 4ft in length.
2.Cichla monoculus
3.Cichla piquiti
4.Cichla ocellaris
5.Cichla thyrorus
3)How to Sex Them??
While juvenline stage, they are almost impossible to sex,but you can sex them when they became mature.males used to grow a nuchul hump on their head and they grow faster than females.Males are also more teritorial than females.
4)How to grow them
It is really interesting to grow your fish from juvenline.Peacock basses are no different.
I suggest aquartists to buy 2-5 inch size bass.Small juvenlines used to have less coloration, but when they grow they well be really really nice! Small babies should be kept in groups,so that they can learn to eat, accept pellets.Driftwood or bogwood should be added, and gravel should be fine sand.
5)What to feed Your Peacock Bass
They are carnivores fish.So you need to feed them meaty items. You may also feed them live fishes, they'll happily accept it.
Shrimps, small fishes, tilapia fillets, mussels, fish fillets are some of those food I suggest.Though You can feed them market pellets as well.
Never cook those shrimps or fishes for your bass. They dont like cooked food.Just make sure they are fresh and wash them and they are ready to be fed.
6)Habitat Requirements
They are massive fish and they need bigger tanks with fast flowing water. They should not be housed in a tank lesser than 180 gallons.Strong filtraion is required as they can produce lot of ammonia.
They are also territorial and aggressive in nature,so bigger tank is better for less aggression.I personally suggest keeping bogwood or driftwood.
7)Water Parameters
pH range 6.5-7.5 is ideal and temp. should be 25-28 degree C.Ammonia, nitrate level should be zero or as less as possible.
8)Tank Mates
A lot of fishes can be housed with them, but they should be same territorial and their size should be equal or bigger than pbass.I suggest these fishes as their tank mates
1)Arowana
2)Datnoids
3)Bichirs
4)Stingrays
5)Vieja cichlids
6)Florida gar
7)Large plecos
8)Other big sized catfishes
9)Oscars
10)Other C.A cichlids as well.
9)Breeding Peacock Bass
It is not easy to breed them. They need at least 2 to 3 years to get mature.Although you can try breeding them. For breeding,I suggest a 300 gallon tank with a group of 6-8 peacock basses.
You can trigger their breeding behaviour by feeding them high protein foods, like bloodworms,meal-worms.You can also do big water changes to encourage them to breed.
10)Age
They can live upto 12-15 years in wild.In home aquariums they can easily live 5-8 years or even longer if you can care them well.
11)Is Peacock Bass Right Fish For You??
Ok,so now comes the most important thing, are they right for you?Besides their bright colour, beautiful looks they also need very very huge tank and massive filtration. They can grow 2-3feet in tanks easily. They can also live very long. So,if you don't have commitment for them,I suggest not to buy them. But if you love fishes, specially if you are a lover of monster fish and you got a big tank, then I suggest you to buy these beasts.
